I have been in contact with our State Member Mark Bailey MP after residents voiced their concerns with the clearing of land adjoining Toohey Forest.
This land between Griffith University and the South East Freeway is owned by the State Government, Economic Development Queensland. It has significant native vegetation and is a habitat to koalas, and other fauna and flora.
The clearing that is proposed has been approved by Brisbane City Council and is a requirement for a fire management strategy for the site.
Given the significant koala habitat that this site contains, I believe any threat to the existing koala population is unacceptable. This site needs to be protected and add to Toohey Forest.
I have called on the Lord Mayor and the State Government to negotiate to purchase this important habitat so that it can be added to Toohey Forest which is one of the most significant native forests on the southside of Brisbane.
